Baldwin sportsman expects huge spring

Jim Warren

BALDWIN – Outdoor activity is picking up in a unique way in the Baldwin area.

This is the word from avid sportsman Jim Warren.

“There’s no ice fishing, they’re just cleaning up around the lakes and putting the boats in,” Warren said. “Saturday afternoon (grandson), Tyler (Clugston) and his friend, Ryan Kolenbrander went steelhead fishing. They both got three nice ones (at Pere Marquette River). Ryan entered one in the (Troutarama) contest. I think it was about 13 pounds.”

Small game hunting ends on March 31 with rabbit hunting.

His grandson is an honor roll student at Central Michigan University, Warren said.

Turkey seasons will start in late April.

“There’s turkeys all over,” Warren said. “I go in the back and put out corn and I stop at bread stores and pick up big bags and throw (food) out to deer and turkeys. They clean them up.”

On the bear front, Warren said he hasn’t heard of anyone that has seen any bears yet. Depending on the weather, this could change soon, Warren added.
