Ferris State angler having strong season

Chris Oja

BIG RAPIDS — Ferris State angler Chris Oja appears set for a huge senior season.

Oja, a Sault Ste Marie native, competed recently in the Cabella Collegiate Big Bass Bash at Kentucky Lake in Tennessee. He made the first session top 10 with a 5.16-pound and 3.86 smallmouth bass which put him into eight place.

He and his Ferris teammates are looking for wins in the state college tour and in another league this spring.

“I like traveling to other lakes and meeting people from other teams all over the country,” he said.

There will be some stops in Michigan during the spring series.

Oja said he started getting interested with a friend from the Navy.

“Before I came to Ferris, he took me out fishing and that’s when I got on the fishing itch,” he said.
