CCA track hosts conference meet

BIG RAPIDS — The Crossroads Charter Academy track & field teams hosted a West Michigan D League conference meet Wednesday at Mitchell Creek Sports Complex.

CCA junior Ethan Davis took first place in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:15 and was fourth in the 1600-meter run in 5:28. Sophomore Josh Fulmer earned a first-place finish in the 3200-meter run, clocking in at 11:28. He also finished second in the 1600-meter run with a time of 5:09.

The Cougars fared well in the field events Junior Casey Gabalis placed fourth in the discus with a throw of 93-10, while sophomore Shannon Ewing-Brown took the high jump with a 5-6 showing. Sophomore Joe Wendlowsky won the pole vault with an 8-0 leap and fellow sophomore Dawson Soller placed third in the long jump with a 15-9.

Baldwin’s Dexter Hossler was seventh in the 800-meters with a time of 2:43.

On the girls side, sophomore Jaylen Schroeder (2:53) and junior Logan Atchison (3:01) placed first and second, respectively in the 800-meter run. Schroeder also won the 1600-meter run (6:11.25) by defeating Mason County Eastern’s Adrianna Malburg (6:11.32) by a slim margin.

Senior Amber Poortvliet (19.94) and freshmen Natalie Chapman (19.96) and Tahlyana Hinton (21.38) placed second, third, and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles. Chapman (54.66) and Poortvliet (58.62) finished second and third in the 300-meter hurdles.

Bailey Dever took second in the shot put with a throw of 30-10 and placed third in the discus with a 79-0. Teammate Bethany Curtis finished second in the discus with a 79-8.

Baldwin’s Jenna Johnson finished second in the 100-meter dash with a 13.73.


Big Rapids 14-16, Fife Lake Forest Area 2-1

BIG RAPIDS — The Cardinals took care of business against Forest Are on Wednesday.

Josie Prince had three runs and an RBI in game one and Kelsey Walch had a triple and an RBI, while Ann Nelson had one hit and one RBI and Mikayla Klever added one hit. Kelby Strpko was the winning pitcher with six strikeouts, four hits, one walk and zero earned runs in four innings.

In game two, Strpko had one hit and two RBIs and Walch tallied one double, while Morgan Pippin was 3-for-3 with an RBI and three runs. Alissa Ruggles struck out four, walked two, and gave up zero earned runs in three innings.

Big Rapids (2-0) hosts Evart on Friday.
