Osceola County officials to discuss MAC memo, grant

REED CITY — The Osceola County Board of Commissioners will be looking at the ongoing battle between City of Escanaba and Menards, as the two have been battling for more than a year over property valuations and tax amounts.

It has led other municipalities around the state to keep a close eye on the case, as the issue went to the Michigan Tax Tribunal, the Michigan Court of Appeals and Supreme Court, and now is back in front of the tribunal, which originally rendered a favorable decision for the retailer.

During their committee of the whole meeting Tuesday morning, Osceola County commissioners will discuss the matter, as the Michigan Association of Counties, an alliance of Michigan counties working to enhance county government through advocacy, shared services and education, has asked other local governments to financially assist with Escanaba’s legal costs.

Osceola County officials also are expected to discuss a technology grant opportunity for veteran’s services.

Tuesday’s committee meeting will begin one hour later than normal time — at 10:30 a.m. at the Osceola County Courthouse — due to a small number of items in front of government officials. The board of commissioners meeting is scheduled to begin at 11 a.m.
