Area anglers off to good start

RODNEY — The favorable spring time fishing is finally here and active anglers like Jeff Greene of Rodney are taking advantage of their opportunities.

Greene had a profitable day last week

“I went out to the Haymarsh at the south end in the shallow section,” he said. “The water temperature had warmed up one degree from the previous week. It was 56. The weeds out there are really getting aggressive. But I got some really nice bluegills in that shallow water. I was willing to put up with the hassle and catch some nice fish.

“Tuesday morning, I went to Hillview Lake and the water temperature was the same. But there weren’t as nearly as much fish in one to two feet of water as there was at the Haymarsh. I caught a few. There are some fish in the shallow water. They’re just not as active and not as many of them as there are at the Haymarsh. In the real shallow water, the fish are spooky. You almost have to sneak up on the bluegills.”

Greene also was out in early May and noted he was battling the weeds.

“I went out April 26 the first time all year,” he said. “I went to the south end of Haymarsh in the shallowest water. I found the water temperature was 55 degrees which is kind of marginal for bluegill activity. The emergent weeds had already gotten a headstart. I caught some nice fish and a few bluegills. But about every other time they got into the weekends and got off.

‘The weeds are ahead of the water temperature. That’s the first time I went out. It’s hard when you have to fight all those weeds.”

The Saturday trout opener (April 28) was a popular day, Greene said.

‘I was umpiring a baseball tournament in Newaygo and one of the umpires was going to fish at Tamarack Creek on the way back,” Greene said. “For the trout fishermen, that’s always a big deal.”
