Police blotter: Officer called for man without pants pushing bicycle

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids Department of Public Safety officers responded to the following calls Friday through Monday. All calls might not be reported.

Friday, June 22

• At 9:23 a.m., officers investigated a failure to pay in the 700 block of South State Street.

• Officers performed an area check at 10:49 a.m. for a subject playing with a fire hydrant. They found city workers were scraping a hydrant to paint it next week.

• Officers were called to a civil complaint at 1:05 p.m. in the 700 block of East Madison.

• At 1:09 p.m., a walk-in complaint of malicious damage of property was taken at DPS. The complainant reported damage of flowers at the bandshell.

• Officers were called at 4:26 p.m. to the 1200 block of Perry Avenue for a child left unattended. A parent left a 4-year-old in the car with windows down about two inches. Someone walked by and saw the child dancing around but sweating. Parents were in the store for about 20 minutes. They didn’t realize they couldn’t leave the child unattended. Matter referred to prosecutor.

• At 5:31 p.m., officers were told to be on the lookout in the area of Second and Maple for a vehicle with a child bouncing around inside. The vehicle was gone when officers arrived.

• Police were called to the 300 block of South Stewart Avenue for a parent reporting someone was staying in her son’s room. The landlord was notified and the son is on the lease until August. The individual was possibly a maintenance person.

• An employee wanted a suspicious vehicle checked out in the 600 block of South Third Avenue. The vehicle was gone when officers arrived and the employee had already left.

• Officers were called about a disorderly conduct/fight complaint in the 500 block of South Michigan Avenue. An unknown group stopped at a bonfire and there was a verbal argument when they wouldn’t leave. They were gone when officers arrived.

• Officers responded to a personal protection order violation in the 700 block of Perry Avenue. A female stated a second female violated a PPO. A complaint of the violation will be sent to Circuit Court.

• Officers cited a man for having an open intoxicant on the sidewalk in the 100 block of South Michigan.

• A subject thought he was being followed in the 600 block of Maple Street. A vehicle stopped but it didn’t appear to be connected.

• Police performed an area check for a driver under the influence coming into town from 17 Mile Road/Northland Avenue, but they didn’t locate anyone fitting the description.

Saturday, June 23

• At 8:30 a.m., officers assisted a motorist at State and Maple streets. A vehicle accelerated from the light, which caused a lawn mower to fall out of the trunk. The officer stood by while the driver secured the lawn mower in the trunk.

• Officers performed an area check at 9:16 a.m. in the area of Fuller and Clark for a male without any pants on pushing a bike. He was located in the area. He was wearing pants. When asked if he was walking with no pants on he said his pants fell down. He appeared to be on something at the time. Later, officers were called about the male laying near a drive in the 800 block of Water Tower Road. He was transported to the emergency room for evaluation of a swollen foot.

• Police were called by the brother-in-law of the man above at 10:43 a.m., who thought officers were looking for him. His sister stopped by and left a purse in the garbage. He was concerned drugs may be in the purse. The purse was checked and no drugs were located.

• At 11:05 a.m., officers responded to a civil dispute in the 600 block of North State Street over a lawn mower that was dropped off for repair. The business did not want to release the mower as it had damaged parts. They were afraid of a lawsuit if the mower was started and damaged. The owner took the mower knowing it had damaged parts and was told not to start it. The discussion over the mower became heated prior to police involvement.

• A female was cited for minor in possession in the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue. Also in the same block, a 21-year-old was cited for furnishing alcohol to a minor, a 20-year-old woman was cited for minor in possession and a 20-year-old man was cited for minor in possesion.

Sunday, June 24

• Officers were called to a suspicious situation in the 700 block of Fuller Avenue.

• Officers assisted EMS in the 700 block of Fuller Avenue.

• Police performed an area check for speeders on Grand Traverse Street and Michigan Avenue. The vehicles were gone when officers arrived.

• Officers responded to the 400 block of Maple Street to perform an area check for someone staying in a tent behind a residence. Officers found a male in the tent. He was given permission by resident to set up the tent for the night.

• At 8:54 p.m., police investigated a hit-and-run personal property damage accident in the 800 block of Tioga Park Drive. A parked vehicle was struck by an unknown red vehicle sometime between 3 and 8:45 p.m. Officers canvassed the area, but no neighbors reported hearing or seeing damage.

• At 11:24 p.m., officers performed an area check for a loud party near the 400 block of Rust Avenue. The officers who checked the area were unable to locate any parties or noise in the area.

Monday, June 25

• Officers were dispatched at 12:20 a.m. to a suspicious vehicle located in the 100 block of South State Street. The vehicle was located unoccupied.

• At 3:38 a.m., a be-on-the-lookout alert was issued for an erratic driver on Perry Avenue east from US 131. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the vehicle.
