Big Rapids golfers earn all-state honors

BIG RAPIDS — Three Big Rapids boys golfers earned prestigious honors this week.

Big Rapids junior Pierce Morrissey was named to the Michigan Interscholastic Golf Coaches Association’s (MIGCA) first-team all-state team, as well as the 2018 Super Team.  Senior Fletcher Bolda and junior Owen Seay earned first-team all-state honors.

In 17 tournaments this season, Morrissey averaged a score of 74.06. Seay averaged a 78.28 and Bolda an 80.12.

“They’re hard-working boys,” head coach Mark Posey said. They got what they put in. With Fletcher, you’re looking at a kid that made all-state in two different sports. Pierce and Owen are juniors so they have room to get better and they’re excited about that.”

The MIGCA awards the state’s top golfers with All-State awards for all four MHSAA divisions as well as an All-Division “Super Team,” comprised of the very best high school golfers from around the state, regardless of division.  Only eight golfers in the entire state make the cut every year. Morrissey has now done that three times.

Morrissey led the Cardinals to a second-place finish in the Division 3 state golf tournament with a second-round score of 77 to finish with a two-day score of 147, which was good for first overall.

“This type of thing doesn’t happen every year,” Posey said. “We have a special group of kids.”
