POLICE BLOTTER: Man seeks nicotine fix from ashtrays

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids Department of Public Safety officers responded to the following calls Thursday. All calls might not be reported.

• Officers responded to a two-car property damage accident at 11:14 a.m. at State Street and Morrison Avenue.

• Police performed drug take back duties at 3 p.m. at Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital.

• At 3:55 p.m., police responded to the 1800 block of Milton Avenue for a 7- and 8-year-old fighting. Police told the parents to supervise their kids.

• Officers handled a walk-in credit card fraud complaint at 3:58 p.m. at DPS. The incident occurred in Waterford.

• Police responded to a two-car property damage accident at 3:59 p.m. on the 600 block of Oak Street.

• Officers investigated a two-car hit-and-run accident in a parking lot on Second Avenue. After reviewing the video, officers recognized the driver and plan to follow up next week.

• A two-car property damage accident occurred at 4:16 p.m. at State and Bridge streets.

• Police responded to a suspicious situation complaint on the 200 block of North Michigan Avenue.

• Officers made contact with a 29-year-old man, who was seen walking on the 100 block of Linden Avenue entering the trash shed behind a building. The man said he was collecting cigarette butts from ashtrays and trashcans in the area because he could not afford a new pack. He had about eight used cigarette butts. Officers advised the man about the city’s prowling ordinance and he was released after the property was checked and found to be secure.

• Police found an open door to a business on the 100 block of South Michigan Avenue. Nobody was inside the business and police were unable to secure the door from the outside. No key holder responded to the scene.

• Officers performed an area check for a woman yelling while on the phone near Mill and State streets. Officers checked the area but were unable to locate the woman. The caller was unable to provide information on the direction the woman was traveling.
