BIG RAPIDS — For years, Oliver Hathaway has taken swimming lessons at the Charles E. Fairman Community Pool.

Hathaway, 17, of Big Rapids, competes in Special Olympics and has taken handicap swim lessons at the pool. This year, he decided he wanted to give back to the organization that has provided him with so much enjoyment.

He decided to open a lemonade stand and give all the proceeds to the pool.

“I wanted to be generous to the pool — I wanted to thank them for everything they’ve done for me,” Hathaway said.

His lemonade stand was scheduled to operate for two hours Friday afternoon. Midway through the first hour, he reported sales were going well, and several people had made generous donations to the cause. Offering several different varieties of lemonade, he added most customers preferred pink.
