LEROY — Cross country practices will be starting for local teams on Aug. 8 and some new coaches will be leading their squads.

Pine River has a new skipper in Alyssa Crouch who has replaced Andi David. Crouch is currently the fourth- and fifth-grade special education teacher at Pine River. She has been the middle school cross country coach and the boys middle school track coach.

Crouch ran cross country and track at Pine River under school Hall of Fame coach Cecil Burch.

Crouch said she’s getting to know some of the runners on the varsity squad. She plans on running with her athletes during practices.

As she awaits her first practice, Crouch isn’t quite sure how many runners she’ll have competing for the team.

“I’m going to have to wait and see,” she said. “I know a few returning runners. We have some new cross country runners. I know some of my eighth graders who will be freshmen and are moving up.”

Like other cross country coaches, Crouch will focus on building numbers and get in as many miles as possible from her athletes.

“I really enjoy working with the middle school and thought this would be an opportunity to move up and see where I can help the team grow,” Crouch said.

Evart gets ready

Evart cross country coach Kevin Mills said his team will have another preseason run starting at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, prior to the official start of the practice season.

Mills said when the season opens on Aug. 8, his team will have a camp at Eagle Village.
