Chamber’s Lunch and Learn event to focus on onboarding

BIG RAPIDS — As part of its ongoing Lunch and Learn series, the Mecosta County Area Chamber of Commerce wants to help local employers find and retain quality employees.

The chamber’s August Lunch and Learn event — Employee Onboarding — will take place from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the chamber offices, located at 127 S. State St., Big Rapids.

Onboarding is the process of integrating a new employee into the organization and its culture.

The free event will feature Jody Gardei, of the Staff Center for Training and Development at Ferris State University, who will lead attendees through the steps of employee onboarding, including how to create an effective onboarding plan. Attendees also will be able to identify the benefits of onboarding for both new and current staff members.

Finding great talent for your business is more difficult than ever. With today’s job market, the need to make sure new hires stay with the company for the long term is critical. Studies report a centralized, focused, properly resourced process of incorporating new talent into a firm may help prevent early turnover for as many as 1 in 4 new hires. This is important when you realize that filling a position left vacant due to poor onboarding techniques on average can cost companies nearly $11,000.

Space is limited for the event, but those wishing to attend must RSVP.
