BIG RAPIDS — Mark Posey and the Big Rapids girls golf team are ready to take the course this season.

The Cardinals won the CSAA, placed third at regionals, and finished 12th overall in the Division 3 state tournament last season. They’re aiming to win the whole thing this season, but have some work to do.

Big Rapids lost first-team all-conference honoree Haley Geib to graduation but returns plenty of talent, led by juniors Hope Thebo and Holly McKenna.

“I expect Hope will repeat as the CSAA Individual Champion,” Posey said. “She will compete for a lot of top 10’s at our tournaments and is in the running for an All-State Selection. Holly should be right there in the running for a lot of top 10’s and the CSAA Individual Champion, as well. She was first-team All-Conference last year.

“She ended the year on a high note at the state finals and will be looking to carry that momentum into this season.”

The Cardinals have another pair of juniors in Valerie Seay and Peyton Fuller who will be key to the team’s success.

“Val was honorable mention last year and will be looking to improve on that this year,” Posey said. “ She is definitely one of the team leaders and will also be looking to make a major contribution to the team’s chances for a state championship.

“Peyton was also an honorable mention last year. I would expect her to be in contention for first-team all-conference and be a consistent contributor.”

Rounding out the 2018 team are promising sophomores Lauren Posey and Avery Chaput.

“Lauren improved a lot as the season went on last year and will be looking to continue that improvement,” Posey said. “Avery got a lot of playing time last year and learned a lot about what it takes to be a varsity golfer. She will be expected to continue to work on her game and find ways to be a contributor to this team.”

Depth is a strength of this team and the Cardinals should be a force to be reckoned with come postseason play.

“This is a special group of girls that have a great chemistry with each other,” Posey said. “They share the same commitment to their games and the team that will allow them to earn some success on and off the golf course.”
