Big Rapids senior lineman eager to start season

Matt Zeilinger

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids football coach Mike Selzer is anxious to watch players like Matt Zeilinger, a 6-foot-4, 230-pound offensive lineman/defensive end, in action this season.

“He’s a good run blocker and strong pass rusher,” Selzer said.

Zeilinger and the Cardinals are getting ready to kick off the season on Thursday at Shepherd.

It will be his third season on varsity.

“Last year went all right,” Zeilinger said. “This year, it’s looking better.”

Zeilinger also started last year.

“At D-end, I have to contain,” he said. “I can’t let anybody get outside of me. At left tackle, it’s pretty much blocking.”

Zeilinger indicated his strength is a main asset, plus his height.

There was a lot of summer work and lifting for Zeilinger and his teammates.

“I’m stronger and I’m faster from last year,” he said.

Big Rapids was 3-6 last season.

“I feel we can do a lot this year,” Zeilinger said. “We have a really strong line. A lot of guys know what they’re doing. I feel we’ll do really well this year.”
