MORLEY — Two football games are in the books for Morley Stanwood, and it’s apparent what the main area is where the Mohawks will need some work:

Morley Stanwood fell to 1-1 with Thursday’s 12-3 nonleague loss to McBain. The Mohawks were coming off a 19-0 win over Central Montcalm in the opener on Aug. 23.

Early in the game, Alvro Orjas Penans kicked a 22-yard field goal.

“We moved the ball down to the 5 but we couldn’t punch it in,” Huntey said. “That’s why we kicked the field goal. After that, we just went stagnant. We went stagnant offensively and just couldn’t move the ball.”

Huntey was happy with his team’s defense.

“We gave up a touchdown late in the second quarter and they went up at halftime up 6-3,” he said. “We played pretty well. They ended up putting up a score late in the game with under two minutes left to seal the deal. We couldn’t get anything going offensively so our defense was on the field a majority of the second half. We got worn down and we got tired from playing too much defense.”

McBain plays in the Highland Conference.

“They were solid,” Huntey said. “They weren’t that much better than us. We’re similar teams. We were stagnant on offense and couldn’t make things happen. We did not execute very well.”

Morley Stanwood returns home on Friday to play Lakeview in the Central State Activities Association Silver Division opener.

“The next five games are all league games and are huge,” Huntey said. “We always have huge games with Lakeview. It doesn’t matter what the records are. Our emphasis will be to get ready for Lakeview on both sides of the ball.”
