Reed City volleyball plays in semifinals

BIG RAPIDS — Reed City’s volleyball team advanced to the semifinals of the Big Rapids Cardinal Invitational on Saturday before losing to Tri County.

Big Rapids lost in its first match of the final round.

The Coyotes were 2-4 in pool play. They lost 25-14, 25-20 and won 25-18 against Newaygo. They lost 25-20 25-21 and won 5-19 against Alma.

There were only three teams in the Coyotes’ pool.

Big Rapids played in a pool with three teams and was 4-2 in pool play. The Cardinals beat Lakeview 25-22, 25-12 and Ludington 25-13, 25-22 and lost to Tri County 25-10, 27-26. In the first round of the finals, Big Rapids lost to Lakeview 25-20, 19-25, 15-9.

Players on the roster for the Cardinals were Grace Fath, Ariana Costie, Megan Mackall, Mackaela Klever, Kelby Strpko, Kamryn Cushway, Eden Mason, Brooklyn Morneau, Rachel Hope, Jenna Kondziolka, Tegan Jones and Alissa Ruggles.

“Overall, it didn’t go too badly,” Big Rapids coach Chelsea Nelson said. “We had three girls playing out of their normal position due to injuries. We adjusted well on their part. A big thing is limiting errors in the last 10 points of the game. That seems to be our biggest issue right now. This will be a focus in practice.”

Reed City beat Ludington 25-12, 25-23 and advanced to the semifinals against Tri County and lost 25-19, 25-19.

“I thought we continued to improve,” Reed City coach Don Patterson said. “I thought we’ve been improving all year. Our passing was better. We had more offense than we’ve had. We are getting a little better. We’re still young.”

For the day, Alison Duddles had 28 kills, one ace, 13 digs and eight blocks; Demi Lodholz had 21 kills, five aces, 13 digs and three blocks; Mackenzie Wein had 11 kills, five aces and 28 digs; Katelynn Holmes had three kills, two aces, five digs and four blocks; Maddie Morgan had one kill, two aces and 19 digs; Claudia Francke had six kills, five aces, 11 digs, 86 assists and one block; Kamryn Myers had three kills, one ace and 16 digs; Mady Brown had eight kills, one ace and 25 digs and Jenna Johnson had four kills, five digs and one block.

Big Rapids is at Fremont and Reed City is at Grant on Tuesday in Central State Activities Association Gold Division action.
