BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids boys soccer team knew they were in for a tough match against the Lions of Newaygo on Monday.

The Lions got off to a strong start and defeated the Cardinals 6-3 at Big Rapids High.

“Newaygo is a good team,” head coach Justin Fox said. “I think they were the better team today, for sure. You never like losing, but we lost to a team that’s better than us. We need to handle adversity a little better, but that’s high school sports.

“It was a challenge today. We showed signs of it, but we need to show 80 minutes of it.”

Saif Abdulameer scored two goals for the Cardinals and Jonah Hengesbach tallied one. The Lions took advantage of the Cardinals’ defensive breakdowns in the first half, which led to a 4-1 Big Rapids deficit at halftime.

The Lions continued pushing the pace in the second half scoring two goals 12 minutes into the half to take a 6-1 lead.

The Cardinals continued to battle, with Hengesbach and Abdulameer each scoring a goal in the second frame to round out scoring.

“We get chasing the ball one way,” Fox said. “Instead of just holding our ground, we get caught running after it. That leaves the cutback open for them. We knew they were going to play a lot of long ball. We tried to get that taken care of, but we had some breakdowns.

“They had the momentum today. We had a lot of chances right before the half to make it 4-2. If we make it 4-2, that gives us a lot of confidence and things may have been different.”

“We knew this was going to be a tough one,” Fox said. “Hopefully that gets us playing quicker. We’d like to see a better reaction from our guys for 80 minutes.”
