BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids senior Logan Williams is bidding to have his best cross country season, and he’s definitely headed in this direction.

Williams and his teammates performed in Friday’s Michigan State Spartan Invitational and took third in his division with a season record of 16:50.1. He was second last week at the Ferris Invitational in 18:01.4 and second a few days earlier at Central Montcalm in a Central State Activities Association Gold race.

His personal record still stands at 16:28.89, which he clocked at the Division 2 regionals in Gaylord last season.

“It’s been going pretty good,” he said after the Helsing meet. “I’m hoping to break the 16s.”

Big Rapids runners take the strategy of gradually building to peak by around regional time. Williams is confident he’s headed in this direction.

“I want to get better in racing the 5K and get used to the distance again,” he said. “I’ve improved a respectable amount (from last year). We’ll see at end of the season.”

Williams said the start has usually been the best part of his race.

“I need to improve on endurance and keeping the pace,” he said.

Big Rapids has a CSAA Gold meet at Chippewa Hills on Tuesday.

“Overall we’re looking strong,” Williams said. “We have some promising guys coming up. Fremont won the first race and we came up second.”
