BIG RAPIDS — Filling the dessert table this Thanksgiving can be as easy as making a phone call, and can come with the benefit of helping other people in Mecosta and Osceola counties.

The Mecosta-Osceola United Way’s annual “Big Country” 100.9 FM 2018 Great Cake Auction is set for 8:45 a.m. until approximately noon on Monday, Nov. 19, and Tuesday, Nov. 20. Throughout both mornings, a variety of cakes, pies and fudge, created by local individuals and organizations, will be auctioned off and all proceeds will benefit the 20 agencies the Mecosta-Osceola United Way supports.

“The auction is fun and brings awareness that the campaign is still going on,” said Mecosta-Osceola United Way Executive Director Betty Seelye. “We are about halfway to our campaign goal of $375,000.”

Seeyle noted community members can expect some of their old favorites, like Karen Bluhm’s “Aunt Dorothy’s Chocolate Cake,” Pere Marquette Catering’s pecan, apple and pumpkin pies and Pat Currie’s “Mecosta County Fair ‘Horsin’ Around’ Cake.”

“Last year, we made almost $7,500. I’m hoping for similar this year,” Seelye said. “It’s all for a good cause.”

Fifteen minutes before items are set to be sold, a picture of the baker, or bakers, with their confection will be posted on “Big Country” 100.9 FM’s website, When the item bidders would like to purchase comes to the auction block, they can call (231) 796-7000.

“It goes fast and it’s a lot of fun,” Seeyle said. “We expect another great time for the United Way.”
