Ferris State men’s hockey junior Jason Tackett eyes big weekend at Minnesota State

BIG RAPIDS — Ferris State’s hockey team puts a 4-6 record on the line this weekend with Western Collegiate Hockey Association games at Minnesota State on Friday and Saturday.

The Bulldogs will be looking at junior forwards like Jason Tackett, a sophomore from West Chester, Ohio, to come up with key contributions.

Ferris was swept 5-4 and 4-3 by Michigan Tech over the weekend and will try to bounce back this weekend.

“I could have done more and everyone could have given a little more,” Tackett said. “especially when you get swept. It’s never anything you wanted.”

Tackett has been among his team’s top offensive threats. A year ago, he dressed in 28 contests for Ferris State, finished with three goals and three assists for six points. He had three points in four games from Jan. 12 to Jan. 20.

As a freshman, he dressed in 29 games for Ferris State, scored four goals and earned five assists for nine points

Ferris is 2-2 in the WCHA. The key to having more success, Tackett said, is starting faster.

“We come out and start slow and have two strong periods,” Tackett said. “If we put 60 minutes together, we can be a dangerous team and beat anyone in the country.”

His own season “has been better than in years past. I’m happy with it. We’re at 4-6 and have to look at ourselves in the mirror and see where we can improve.”

Tackett put on extra pounds during the summer and has improved his strength, he indicated. In nine games, he has four goals and three assists.
