CSAA Gold recognizes Big Rapids football players

BIG RAPIDS — The 2018 high school football season comes to an end with the playoffs on Saturday but it was a memorable one for the Big Rapids Cardinals who were 5-5 and returned to the playoffs.

Several Cardinals were named recently to the all-CSAA Gold division team.

The Cardinals tied for third in the league with a 4-3 record. Honorees were senior Jayden Mason, Jackob Martinson, Ike Lobert, Elliott Blair, Adam Bollman and Jace Gray.

Tom Lobert was on the honorable mention list.

Big Rapids coach Mike Selzer offered the following comments on each player.

Jayden Mason: “Quarterback had a great season and was our leading rusher.”

Jakob Martinson: “Leading receiver often double teamed by defenses, also cover corner.”

Elliott Blair: “Leading tackler and short yardage running back.”

Adam Bollman: “Second leading tackler and blocking tight end for us.”

Jace Gray: “Running back and corner who averaged over 10 yards per carry.”

Ike Lobert: “Leader of the offensive line and best drive blocker.”

Tom Lobaert: “Utility offensive lineman, played at all positions on the line as well as the defensive line.”

Mason ran for 986 yards and 12 touchdowns. He also passed for 694 yards as Big Rapids’ top offensive weapon.

Gray gained 358 yards on 33 carries for six touchdowns.

Mattson caught 18 passes for 361 yards and two touchdowns.

Blair had 54 tackles and eight assists. Bollman had 49 tackles and 10 assists. Ike Lobert had 23 tackles and eight assists.
