BIG RAPIDS — The opening tipoff for boys basketball season is a week away and players like Big Rapids LJ Graves are eager to get going.

Graves is a junior in his second year on the varsity.

“Things last year went good,” he said “But we lost in first round of the districts. We didn’t play enough like a team. This year, we’ve got a different group of kids. So hopefully we can put together a team, work better as a team, and go out and get some hard-earned wins.”

The first game is on Nov. 30 at Morley Stanwood.

“My role was to get rebounds,” he said. “Hopefully this year, I can score a little more.”

At 6 feet 5 inches, Graves is the team’s tallest player.

“The right timing and getting a good boxout before the ball hits the rim,” is the key, Graves said, to being an effective rebounder.

As for shooting, “your best shot is always the closest shot, but I can hit a 10-footer or 15-footer,” he said.

Graves put in extensive offseason work and hopes to help the Cardinals have a good season.

“We’re going to be young, but a lot of us have played together since we’ve been kids,” he said.
