BIG RAPIDS — Britton Angell and his Crossroads teammates are just two games into the season.

But the talented Cougar senior seems to be in mid-season form, and then some.

Angell scored 22 points in the first half and had 31 overall to lead CCA (2-0) to a 74-32 boys basketball win over Mesick (0-2) in the West Michigan D League opener for both teams on Friday.

“We got better from our last game,” CCA coach Julian Castillo said. “There are things we need to improve upon. We got lazy a little bit in the third period and didn’t come out hard. But I loved the improvement the boys did. They’re willing to be coachable.”

Angell had a slam dunk to put CCA up 16-6 late in the first quarter. It was 18-6 going into the second.”

Angell had two 3-point plays in the second quarter. Carlson had one of his own and Isaac Slomp followed with a layup for a 34-9 lead midway in the quarter. Davis scored before the half ended to give his team a 43-20 halftime lead.

The Cougar offense continued to enjoy success in the second half. Two Angell free throws gave his team a 60-20 lead and it was 69-22 after three quarters. The rest of the game was played under a running clock.

“We need to understand on getting back defensively and knowing what defense we’re in and what we need to do in that particular defense,” Castillo said. “I’m fine with the offense. It’s the defense that creates the offense and we’re still not there.”

Ethan Davis added 12 points while Jackson Wickes and Cody Carlson added 10 apiece.

“I thought we really executed the offense,” Davis said. “The coach has wanted us to get out and run.”

CCA opened the season on Tuesday in a 68-61 nonleague win over McBain Northern Michigan Christian. Angell had 30 points and Wickes 16 points.

CCA is at Manistee Catholic Central on Wednesday.
