BIG RAPIDS — Action resumes for the Big Rapids hockey team and sophomore Eric Standen on Saturday when the Cardinals host Cheboygan at the Ewigleben Ice Arena in an afternoon game.

Standen has played every game as goalie so far. He had huge skates to fill when four-year starting goalie Fletcher Bolda graduated.

“Our goalie played phenomenal,” Big Rapids coach Tim Blashill said after the 5-3 loss to the Bay Area Reps on Nov 24 in the regionals of the Big Rapids Thanksgiving Tournament. “He had 17 saves in the first period alone.”

The Cardinals will have a busy month and play next weekend at Gaylord.

“We’re doing a good job,” Standen said. “We just need to do a better job down low. I need to keep my eye on the puck at all times, work on rebound control and keep the puck out of the net.”

Standen played travel hockey in Grand Rapids last season. He had previously played nine years in the Big Rapids hockey system.

“I decided I wanted to come back and play with my friends whom I had played with as a skater,” he said. “I earned (the starting job) during tryouts.”

Standen remembers watching Bolda.

“We both keep our eye on the puck and strong around plays and rebound control,” he said. “I’m focusing on winning and getting that regional title.”

Big Rapids has won the last two regional crowns.

“We’re capable of going to Plymouth (for the state finals) and winning it all,” Standen said. “We have the key players. We’ve got the guy and just need to put the systems to work.”
