Warriors set for another strong wrestling season

Kevin Edwards

REMUS — It’s a new era of sorts at Chippewa Hills with a first-year head wrestling coach.

Kevin Edwards is the new head skipper although he was assistant for 17 years under Nate Ethridge. He takes over a program that has made it to the state semifinal the past three seasons. Ethridge is now a high school coach in Georgia.

The 2017-18 Warriors were CSAA conference champs, team district champs, team regional champs, team state semifinalists and 10 individual state qualifiers.

“We graduated 14 seniors,” Edwards said. “Jaycob Sharp was a great leader and role model. Billy Koepf was very tough, who always gave his best effort. Robert Granberry was the emotional leader of the team and Austin Young was the ultimate team player.”

But every year, it seems like the Warriors still have plenty of talent on the roster.

“Mason Hayes (senior) is a returning state placer who is currently ranked second by Michigan Grappler and will be wrestling 145 and 152,” Edwards said. “Colby Roosa (sophomore) is a returning state qualifier ranked seventh by Michigan Grappler and will be wrestling at 285.

“We work hard and train the right way, commitment to the team and to being a good teammate, be competitive at the state level and return to team state to make a run at a state championship. We have a toughness and a willingness to work and train the right way throughout the season. We have a lot of young wrestlers that will find themselves in the varsity lineup for the first time, and they will need to learn to compete at that level.”

Chippewa Hills is among the favorites to take the league crown.

“Fremont has a tough team and will be a top challenger,” Edwards said.

The Warriors wrestled at Gladwin on Wednesday and are at Grandville on Saturday.
