EVART — It’s been a good start for Evart’s young wrestling program.

The Wildcats finished fourth with two wins in Saturday’s Big Rapids Invitational.

Evart netted wins over Grand Rapids West Catholic and Big Rapids.

“LJ Clark (189) did fantastic today at 3-1,” Evart coach Ryan Hopkins said. “Reese Ransom (152) was 3-2. Garrett Johnson was (171) 3-2. It was a great, great tournament. We had great improvements. A lot of boys surprised us today. We did very well and were super impressed.”

Darren Gostlin was 3-2 at 112.

“I feel I could have done better,” he said. “I’m trying to cut to 103.”

Evart has been building the program the past five seasons and continues to improve its numbers.

“We’re only voiding just a couple of weight classes,” Hopkins said. “We’re super proud of the boys.”

There are 13 on the roster. Clark, Gostlin, Ransom and Johnson are expected to be among the top wrestlers.

Evart opened its season on Wednesday and was 1-1 in a double dual against Pine River and Coleman. Gostlin was 2-0.

The Wildcats will be home on Wednesday against Roscommon and Hesperia.
