Ferris women’s basketball team 6-3

BIG RAPIDS — It’s going to be a Merry Christmas for Ferris State’s women’s basketball team.

The Bulldogs entered the holiday break with a 72-44 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference victory over Saginaw Valley on Saturday at Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs are 6-3 overall and 3-1 in the GLIAC. They return on Dec. 29 at Maryville, Mo.

“I’m really impressed with the steps we took forward to focus and keep our intensity level for 40 minutes,” Ferris coach Kendra Faustin said. “This is exam week. It takes skill to focus on what you have to do. Now they have to focus on the classroom.”

Ferris led 19-12 after the first quarter and 35-14 at halftime. It was 63-20 after the third quarter.

Lily George led Ferris with 15 points and three rebounds. Brayenne Brenner had 10 points and eight rebounds. She shot 5-of-5 from the floor. Adrienne Anderson and Kelsey Wyman had nine points apiece.

“Our main goal was to come out with a lot of intensity,” Ferris sophomore guard Shaniya Higgins said. “We tried to stop each one of their shooters and play up to our level. We know we have a really good team.”

Ferris shot 31-of-66 from the floor for 47 percent and had a 55-32 edge on the boards.

This marks one of Ferris’ best records headed into the holidays in recent seasons.

“We’ve taken some big steps forward,” Faustin said. “I think this is a special group capable of some special things, and we’re looking forward to getting better every day.”
