Somsel boosts Big Rapids hockey team

BIG RAPIDS — Jack Somsel’s junior hockey season has been a strong one so far for the Big Rapids center.

It’s his second year on the varsity team. He has been forward in the past.

He’s seeing more playing time this season.

“I like playing center,” he said. “You just have to buy into the system.”

Somsel scored his first goal of the season against the Bay Area Reps in the Cardinals’ Thanksgiving weekend tournament.

“I just went to the net and got to a rebound, I was there to put it in,” he said. “We’ve had some of our main guys (score) and have also had the defense step up and score.”

Somsel indicated he controls the puck well and is also strong in finding the net.

The Cardinal hockey team, 4-2, plays at the Gaylord Showcase this weekend against state powers Flint Powers and Chelsea.

“We just have to play together,” he said.
