LEROY — Whether it’s football, basketball or track, Elijah Lewis has been utilizing his athletic talents to benefit Pine River athletic teams.

Right now, he’s been a key player for coach Brian Goodenow’s Bucks boys basketball team.

“Elijah is probably our best athlete and one of our leaders on the floor,” Goodenow said. “He is a dynamic scorer who will cause turnovers and create offense.”

It’s his third year of varsity basketball.

“My role is the same, more of getting the team together and make sure we stay calm and run the offense,” Lewis said. “Whatever is in the flow of the offense is what we run.”

His first step is a key weapon for Lewis.

“I’m usually quicker than most players I go against,” he said, adding he’s secure in shooting from just about anywhere. “I feel pretty confident. My highest game was our first game at Houghton Lake. I had 21.”

A 55-41 win over Beal City was among his team’s finest efforts, Lewis said.

Pine River is 4-4 going into a Thursday home game against McBain Northern Michigan Christian.

“We played together in that game and got open shots,” Lewis said, adding compared to a year ago he’s improved “tremendously,” and is a tri-captain.

“I believe we can win all our games if we really try,” Lewis said. “The key to each game is our defense.”

Lewis said he has talked to colleges for football and track. Michigan Tech and Olivet are his leading candidates in football and Ohio schools for track. He hopes to make a decision by the end of basketball season.
