LEROY — Bryan McCurry is a talented senior wrestler on a young Pine River squad and is hoping to help the Bucks get better as they head into the critical weeks of the season.

McCurry was 2-0 Wednesday night at Evart in Mid-Michigan Wrestling Conference action. He’s 23-1 after losing in the Marquette Invitational finals.

“I feel pretty good about it,” said McCurry, who has been at 285 pounds, and plans on staying at this weight class for the individual state finals.

This season in his career, “has been my best start,” McCurry said. “my tightest match was against a heavyweight from Manton who has been having a good year. It’s probably been my closest and most significant win.

“On my feet I’m feeling good, but I have to get better on the mat.”

Pine River, which has been a state semifinalist in past seasons, is at the Forest Hills Eastern Invitational on Saturday.

“We’re a little bit younger this year,” McCurry said. “We got a slap in the face early in the season when a really good opponent Carson City-Crystal handled us pretty well. We have a lot of freshmen.”

McCurry has been a three-time state qualifier. His best finish was eighth as a freshman and sophomore. His goal is to return and finish as high as he possible can.
