BIG RAPIDS — The National Wild Turkey Federation Michigan Chapter is again having its state convention in Big Rapids.

This year’s convention is Jan. 18-19 at the Holiday Inn. Among the featured events is the Hunting Heritage Banquet and Michigan State Convention awards on Jan. 19.

Janice Kuhtic and her husband Phil, are co-convention chairpersons.

Events on Friday are 6-11 p.m. featuring hospitality, cash bar, snacks, and games and The Learn To Hunt mentoring presentation. On Saturday at 9 a.m. it’s the state chapter board meeting,

From 2-3:30 p.m., featured speakers are Steve Sharp, NWTF Region 3 Coordinator; and Al Stewart, Michigan DNR Upland Game Birds biologist.

Doors open for the banquet at 4 p.m. with dinner around 5:45 p.m. Silent and live auctions and games will be featured.

“It’s our award ceremony after dinner,” Phil Kuhtic said.

Big Rapids has hosted the convention for several years. About 150 attend the banquet, Kuhtic said.

“It’s pretty much centrally located,” Kuhtic said. “You have the U.P. and Detroit and the middle part of the state. My wife and I are south of Grand Rapids.”

Several chapters across the state will be having chapter dinners.

“We have a local biologist on staff, Ryan Boyer,” Kuhtic said. “He’s worked on raising money. We’re getting a lot of work done in the state. We’re trying to get people back into any type of hunting. It’s not as big as it used to be.”

NTF’s goal is improving the turkey habitat and, as a result, building hunter numbers.
