MORLEY — A win is a win.

That’s what Morley Stanwood girls basketball coach Rob Brauher said after his Mohawks held off a late Newaygo rally to defeat the Lions 51-49 at home on Tuesday.

“We’ll take it,” Brauher said. “We have to grow from it I challenged them to come out strong and I think we did.”

The Mohawks took a 28-23 lead into halftime and led by as many as 14 in the third quarter when they went up 41-27. A 16-4 Lions run cut Morley Stanwood’s lead to 45-43 in the fourth quarter and a Newaygo basket off a Morley Stanwood turnover cut the Mohawks’ lead to 50-49 with 24 seconds remaining.

“In the third quarter we allowed them to hit a few threes and they got themselves back in the game,” Brauher said. “In the fourth, we tightened up. When they started to pressure us, we started making mistakes.”

Seconds later, Brooke Brauher was fouled and made 1 of 2 free throws to put the Mohawks up 51-49. Newaygo had a chance to win the game but its 3-point attempt was off the mark.

“We’re a young team,” Brauher said. “We’re lucky enough that we got through it and got a win out of it. Newaygo’s gonna have a very good group there.”

Breanna Berry led the Mohawks with 15 points while Abi Waldo had a season-high 13 and Brooke Brauher added 12. Madison Garbow tallied seven points.

“I challenged Abi to look to score more and you saw it tonight. She’s working extremely hard. If she can add the offense to her great defense, she’s going to be a double threat.”

“Personally, I’m more defense-oriented,” Waldo said. “My aggressive defense gave me the confidence to shoot, so I took the open shots that I had.”

Jaxie Long led Newaygo with 22 points.

The Mohawks (6-4, 3-2) face Lakeview at 5:30 p.m. Friday.
