Woolworth having strong junior year for Mohawks

MORLEY — Many players have contributed a key role with Morley Stanwood’s boys basketball team including talented junior Axel Woolworth.

In Friday’s 72-37 CSAA Silver win over Lakeview, which put the Mohawks at 12-0 overall, Woolworth had 20 points and four steals.

It’s among many productive games he’s had for the Mohawks in his first varsity season.

“My season’s going well,” he said. “We’re off to a great start and everyone’s playing well. We’re working well together. It’s a fun team.”

It’s his first varsity season and Woolworth, as his statistics would indicate, didn’t need too much time to adjust to the higher level

“I’m used to it now,” he said. “It’s fun playing with these guys.”

His highest point total for a single game has been 31.

“We have various roles throughout the game,” Woolworth said. “Sometimes it’s passing, sometimes it’s shooting. It depends on the game plan and who we’re playing.”

The corner three is his favorite shot.

“I just need to have the open look,” he said.

Woolworth has been shooting a respectable percentage, which has made him a tough offensive player for defenses to face.

“I also like to drive and help my teammates get open looks,” he said. “I maybe can also help out on the rebounding side and play better defense.”

The Mohawks are at Reed City tonight to play a 9-3 Coyote team.

“We have to work hard at practice and take no days off,” Woolworth said. “We have to stay focused, do our thing and have fun.”
