Ferris loses to Wayne State women

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University women’s basketball squad fought to the wire, but fell short in a 55-46 Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference home setback to the visiting Wayne State Warriors on Saturday at Jim Wink Arena.

The Bulldogs trailed by eight points after the first period and by seven at halftime before rallying back to knot the game up with 2;19 to play. Wayne State outscored FSU 10-1 the rest of the way en route to the win.

Ferris State got a team-best 17 points and 11 rebounds from junior forward Riley Blair in a double-double performance, but she was the lone FSU player to reach double-figures. She also added five blocked shots and two assists.

FSU was limited to 25 percent shooting overall, including only 18.2 percent in the first half. Wayne State also struggled from the floor, shooting 27.1 percent from the field and two-of-eight (11.1 percent) from long range. The Bulldogs went three-of-20 (15 percent) beyond the arc.

Wayne State received a game-high 19 points from Nastassja Chambers in addition to 18 points and 10 boards by Ja’Nae Williams.

Overall, WSU owned a slim 53-48 rebounding margin and the Bulldogs had 19 turnovers to only nine for the Warriors.

The Bulldogs did total a school single-game record 15 blocked shots in the game with six from Brayene Benner in addition to the five by Blair. FSU also had four steals and 14 assists.

In addition to Blair’s 17 points, the Bulldogs got nine points from senior guard Alexis Bush in the setback.

The Bulldogs will play their final two regular-season home games back at Wink Arena this coming week as their four-game homestand continues in Big Rapids. FSU will host Northern Michigan on Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. before entertaining Michigan Tech for Senior Day on Saturday at 1 p.m.
