Morley Stanwood clinche title tie

KENT CITY — Morley Stanwood’s boys basketball team clinched a share of the Central State Activities Association Silver Division title on Saturday with a 62-50 win over Kent City.

It’s the second win for the Mohawks over the defending champion Eagles this season.

The Mohawks are 14-1 overall and 8-0 in the CSAA. They play at Reed City on Monday.

The Morley Stanwood girls fell to 5-3 in the division and 8-6 overall with a 74-30 loss to Kent City, which is 12-2 and 8-0.

The Mohawks are home on Monday against Reed City.

WRESTLING

Chippewa Hills wrestlers

GRAYLING — Chippewa Hills had 12 of 14 wrestlers place in the top four at the Division 3 districts in Grayling on Saturday.

They will compete in Kalkaska in the regionals on Friday.

Taking first places were Carson Hayes (125), Bray Haynes (135), Mason Hayes (140), Gage Petoskey (171), Chayton Wiggins (189) and Colby Roosa (285).

Finishing second were Keigan Storey (125), Trenten Wiggins (160), Carl Whipple (215) and Taylor Gibson (112). Gavin Miller (119) and Daylin Wittig (112) were both fourth.

Chippewa Hills will wrestling at Reed City on Monday in the team district.

Big Rapids wrestlers

Big Rapids took six wrestlers to the district tournament and had three place in the top four of their weight class to qualify for Saturday’s regional at Kalkaska.

Ashton Sova (135) took second. He won by pin and took an 8-3 decision to lose in his title match by injury default.

Matt Henderson (119) was 3-1 for third place. He won 11-2, lost and then won his next two matches.

Kaelan McBride was 2-2 at 145. He won his second and third matches.

Reed City wrestlers

Ryan Simmons was district Champion at 112 going 3-0 on Saturday.

“This is Ryan’s third tournament in a row he has won and his third time as a regional qualifier,” Reed City coach Roger Steig. “Austin Fowler also is going on to the regional. We placed fourth at 189 going 2-2 for the day. We had four wrestlers that came one match away from qualifying for the regional losing in the blood round: Anakin Andrus, Mark White, Kellen Haney and Ryan Neal. Mason Johnson also had a win at 103.”

On Monday, Reed City hosts team district and will wrestle the winner of Big Rapids and Chippewa Hills for the district title. Wrestling starts at 5:30 p.m.

Evart wrestlers

Evart had two wrestlers place in Saturday’s district at Oscoda and qualified for the Division 4 regional Saturday at Charlevoix.

Reese Ransom (140) was second and Darren Gostlin (112) third and will wrestle on Saturday.

Pine River wrestlers

Pine River beat Evart 68-7 and Mason County Central 64-13 on Wednesday to take the district title/

Pine River will host the regional team tournament on Wednesday.

Doublewinners on Wednesday were Kei Beduchi (103), Matt Treiber (112). Wyatt Underhill (125), Jared Koetje (130). Austin Wuestin (160), Brock Nelson (171). Creed Watson (189), Tim Rizor and Bryan McCurry (285).

Rizor took his 100th career win.

The Bucks had 11 wrestlers qualify for the regional based on their efforts in Saturday’s district at Oscoda. Treiber, Nelson. Rizor and Curry were first, Koetje was second. Seth Duncan (119). Thomas Hooker (145), Wuestin and Watson were third and Elijah Harper (189) was fourth.
