Festival of the Arts continues Wednesday

BIG RAPIDS — Wednesday at the Festival of the Arts offers a look at the printed word, architecture and floral design, among other subjects.

• “My Mother’s Daughter,” a presentation by Betty Stolarek, starts the day’s events at 5 p.m. at the Artworks Painted Turtle Gallery, 106 N. Michigan Ave. “My Mother’s Daughter” is Stolarek’s second novel, written under the pen name Rebecca Thaddeus.

The book takes readers into the life of Eugenia Meijer, a 15-year-old from Philadelphia in 1812 who wants to travel to the Mississippi Territory to get married. Stolarek will hold a signing reception at 5 p.m. and read from the book at 5:30.

• “Design After Disaster,” a presentation by Christopher Cosper, is scheduled at 7 p.m. at the Ferris State University Granger Center, 605 S. Warren Ave. Cosper, a native of the Mississippi Gulf Coast and a professor of architecture at FSU, will discuss Hurricane Katrina and its effects on the design movement known as New Urbanism.

• “Accessorizing Workshop,” presented by Serendipity, is set for 7 p.m. at the Serendipity clothing store, 102 S. Michigan Ave. Participants will learn to make their wardrobes into game-changers and wear cute outfits inspired by fashion trends. The workshop is not just the ultra-hip, however — participants also will learn about lasting trends, otherwise known as the fashions that never go out of style. Refreshments will be served.

Space is limited and preregistration is required. Those interested can register in-person or by phone at (231) 629-8464.

• “Spring into Spring,” a presentation by Bob Patterson, is slated for 7 p.m. at Patterson’s Flowers, 216 Maple St. Participants will learn to create a colorful, fresh, spring bouquet. All supplies and tools will be provided.

Those interested can register in-person or by phone at (231) 796-8683. There is a $30 fee for the class.
