BIG RAPIDS — The future is now, for Ferris forward Michael Peterson, who is making key contributions for the Bulldog basketball team and seems to have a bright future for the remainder of his collegiate career.

Peterson, who was recruiting to Ferris from Rockford, is in his sophomore season and has seen action from off the bench.

Ferris is 19-9 overall and 11-6 in the GLIAC’s Northern Division for a one-game lead in first place. Peterson has played in all 28 games. He’s averaging 9.8 minutes, 2.7 points and 2.8 rebounds a games. But he’s taking care of the little things which has pleased Ferris coach Andy Bronkema.

“I’m enjoying the minutes I’m getting right now,” Peterson said. “I’m taking advantage of it and doing what I need to do. I bring a lot of energy, I think. I’m good on the press. I’m steady. I don’t turn the ball over a lot.”

The Bulldogs finished the regular season with road games starting on Tuesday at Purdue Northwest.

“We just have to come out every game with energy,” Bronkema said.

He was member of FSU’s 2018 NCAA Division II National Championship team that finished with a historic 38-1 overall record last year and saw action in 13 games off the bench during the championship campaign. He was redshirted during the 2016-17 campaign.

“If we’d keep the same energy we have, we’ll be OK,” Peterson said.

At Rockford, Peterson, a wing, averaged 15.2 points per game along with 7.7 rebounds and nearly two assists an outing while earning all-state honors.

The Rockford native was an All-Ottawa Kent (OK) Red Conference selection as a senior and also claimed Bank Hoops All-State laurels.

“I need to improve on my shooting,” he said. “I don’t shoot too much. It’s coming along. It’s better than what I’ve done.”
