LEROY — When the season ended for Pine River’s boys basketball team, the Bucks ended at 10-12 overall and 5-7 in league play.

“We expected a little more success, with the bulk of last year’s team returning, but we did increase our win total from a year ago,” Pine River coach Brian Goodenow said. “We set some very high goals for ourselves at the start of the season, so we underachieved to some degree. Highlights included a big win at home over Beal City, and a gritty district semifinal win over Lake City. Finishing below .500 in our league was a disappointment.”

Elijah Lewis, Trenten Holmes and Sasha Huffman were the leading scorers.

“Caleb Bowman and Lane Ruppert directed an outstanding defensive effort, holding our opponents to under 48 points per game on average,” Goodenow said. “Ruppert also did a great job as our floor general on offense.”

All-conference honorees were Ruppert and Elijah Lewis. Huffman was on the honorable mention list.

“Seniors Trenten Holmes, Caleb Bowman, Elijah Lewis were starters and Jacob Johnson and Hunter Poe provided big minutes off the bench,” Goodenow said. “All will be missed.

“Juniors Sasha Huffman, Lane Ruppert and Marcus Jurik will be in their third year on varsity and will be leaned on heavily for leadership. Brian Fauble will also play a very key role. We have a very solid group of players coming up from the JV team who will fit in well and play important minutes next year.”
