BIG RAPIDS — Within a matter of a couple of days this week, ice fishing has gone from being solid to perhaps at the end of the line for the season.

Jerry Mondrella, of Big Rapids, said he went to Hillview Lake several days ago and didn’t catch anything. His grandson came over from Holland and wanted to do some fishing but they battled wind and also got some small ones.

Mondrella was at Townline Lake and caught around 14 bluegills. He was at Burgess and only got one bluegill. He didn’t fish at all on Thursday.

Mondrella said he drove his pickup on Burgess when there was 15 inches of ice on Wednesday.

“With this warm weather and rain going on, it’s not going to get any better,” Mondrella said. “I like to have at least one foot of ice before you drive on it. That’s my rule.”
