BIG RAPIDS — Several local agencies are teaming up in an effort to ensure the safety of local children.

Area residents have an opportunity to find out if their child’s car seat is as safe as possible during a free car seat safety check from noon to 4 p.m. on Friday, March 22, at the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety, 435 N. Michigan Ave.

Hosted by Mecosta Osceola Great Start Collaborative, Spectrum Health Big Rapids and Reed City hospitals, Life Resources of Northern Michigan, Safe Kids, the Big Rapids Department of Public Safety, Reed City Fire Rescue and Evart Fire Department, the event is open to parents, grandparents and anyone else in the community who transports children.

“We know when parents know better, they do better,” said Mecosta Osceola Great Start Collaborative Coordinator Jessica Wimmer. “We wanted to provide an opportunity to educate parents.”

A limited number of free replacement car seats will be available for those with an appointment at the event.

Wimmer added while car seats to be provided will be based on availability, everyone who participates in the safety check will leave with specific information regarding which car seat to purchase for their child and vehicle.

Wimmer said, if possible, caregivers should bring their child and vehicle manual to help the safety technician determine the safest car seat for the height and weight of the child, and the best positioning of the seat in the vehicle.

Residents can schedule an appointment by calling Life Resources of Northern Michigan at (231) 796-4919 or by emailing julie.cole@liferesourcesnm.org. The final appointment for the day will begin at 3:30 p.m., as each car seat check takes approximately 30 minutes.

For additional information, call Wimmer at (231) 592-9605 ext. 2040.
