Big Rapids girls track in second week of preseason practice

Shelly Selzer

BIG RAPIDS — Shelly Selzer will be making her debut this season as Big Rapids’ new girls head track coach.

But she’s hardly a stranger to the coaching scene.

This marks the second week of practice. The track season starts on April 9 at Grant.

Selzer was an assistant in Big Rapids two years and was an assistant at four other schools.

Chase Gibson had been coaching both boys and girls in previous seasons. When practices started on March 11, he was slated to be the boys coach and Selzer the girls coach. Athletic director Dawn Thompson said Gibson recently stepped down for personal reasons and Selzer’s husband, Mike, is now the head coach for boys.

Shelly Selzer was also a collegiate pole vaulter at Grand Valley.

There are 28 girls out for Big Rapids track.

“We doubled it from last year,” Selzer said. “They just came out. I would say a majority of the girls out last year are out this year. There’s quite a lot of freshmen but there are actually some from all grade levels, who are new.”

The distance runners have been outdoors and Selzer said on Tuesday some sprinters would be out this week, depending on the winter. Next week is spring break but there will be optional practices, Selzer said.
