Ferris tennis team stays unbeaten

BIG RAPIDS — The Ferris State University men’s tennis squad stayed unbeaten in Great Lakes Intercollegiate Athletic Conference play as the four-time defending league champions beat Lake Superior State 4-3 on Sunday in Sault Ste. Marie.

The Bulldogs capped off a weekend sweep in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula by beating LSSU in a thriller only a day after the Lakers had knocked off Grand Valley State at home.

The win came on a different surface at the Arbuckle Student Activity Center where traditionally the Lakers have had an advantage inside at home.

Ferris State took the doubles point as the Bulldogs picked up a 6-4 win at the number one flight along with a 6-3 decision at the two spot to claim two of the three positions.

In singles play, the Lakers got two-set wins at the first, fourth and sixth flights to draw even with the Bulldogs after FSU won at two and three singles. The match came down to the fifth flight where Ferris State’s Mathis Guerre pulled out a 6-4, 6-4 decision to clinch the victory.

FSU improved to 4-8 overall this season with the win and 2-0 in the GLIAC.

Ferris swept Michigan Tech in the Bulldogs’ GLIAC) opener on Saturday at the Gates Tennis Center in Houghton.

The Bulldogs rolled to the victory as FSU claimed all three doubles matches and all six singles flights en route to the triumph.

The Bulldogs earned a 6-4 win at one doubles and a 6-3 triumph at the second flight along with a hard-fought 7-6 victory at No. 3 to pick up the first point of the match.

FSU then went on to win all six singles flights in straight-sets while improving to 3-8 overall this season. Ferris State dominated singles play as the closest match came by a 6-0, 7-6 decision at the top spot in the lineup.

Overall, the Bulldogs had a total of seven different players in the lineup in the first league outing this year.

The Bulldogs will play their league home opener on Friday against longtime conference rival Northwood starting at 4 p.m. at the FSU Racquet and Fitness Center in Big Rapids.
