Folkema hopes to be a spark for Cardinals

BIG RAPIDS — Annah Folkema will be among the players Big Rapids softball coach Dawn Thompson will be counting upon heavily to make key contributions for the Cardinal softball team this winter.

During the offseason, Folkema said she worked on her batting at Ferris with hitting instructor and assistant FSU coach Ian James.

“I’ve seen a big help from that,” she said.

Folkema is a senior, and it’s her third year on the varsity level.

“It’s gone pretty good,” she said of past seasons. “I definitely came to play in our district game against Fremont last year. My slap hits were coming together. And my fielding was good.”

Folkema will be in a familiar defensive position: center field.

“I can cover a lot of ground out there,” she said. “My arm is pretty good.”

Folkema said she was happy with her hitting last year and expects it to be even better this season.

“It will be a matter of taking the time after practice and dedicating yourself to the game,” she said.

The Cardinals open the season at home on April 8 vs. Ludington.

“We look very athletic and I think we can win some big ballgames this year,” Folkema said. “We have to play good defense.”
