Hansen set for strong sophomore season

Payton Hansen

REED CITY — Payton Hansen had a standout freshman season for Reed City baseball and wants to help the Coyotes enjoy another championship year.

“I struggled midway through the season but I finally picked it up,” Hansen said, looking back at 2018. “I think I fit in at the beginning.”

This season Hansen will be at catcher, pitcher and third base.

As a catcher, “I’m good at framing and I’m pretty accurate throwing to second base,” he said, adding a strength at third base is “making sure the ball doesn’t get past me, and firing to first base.”

On the mound, Hansen has an effective curveball.

“The fastball isn’t quite where I want it to be right now,” he said.

Hansen expects to see even more action on the mound this year.

He batted around .310 last season and would like to be at .360 this spring.

“I have to come in at the gym and make sure I work harder,” he said.

The Coyotes open the season at Morley Stanwood on April 4. Hansen expects Big Rapids and Morley Stanwood to be among the toughest teams on the schedule.
