BIG RAPIDS — Tuesday feels like ages ago for the Big Rapids girls soccer team.

After falling to Cadillac 8-0 on Tuesday, the Cardinals have rebounded to win two straight games with their latest being an 8-0 victory over Benzie Central on Friday.

“We had a goal to possess the ball and pass,” head coach Curt Ray said. “We try to keep the intensity up in a game like this.”

“I think we did really well,” senior defender Kamryn Cushway said. “We worked on possession a lot more than our game on Tuesday to get prepared for our game on Monday.”

Seniors Selena Wright and Leah Alley tallied four and three goals, respectively and junior Linda Simula added one goal. The Cardinals led 6-0 at halftime.

“I think we did a good job passing and being there for each other and open,” senior Leah Alley said. “We played pretty well as a team.”

The Cardinals have scored 14 goals over their last two games compared to just two from opponents.

“I think a lot of it was coming into the game with the right mindset,” Alley said. “It’s just being prepared to work and give it our best effort.”

Big Rapids (2-1) hosts rival Ludington on Monday in an important early season matchup. The Cardinals hope to carry Friday’s momentum into Monday’s game.

“They don’t like us and we don’t like them,” Ray said. “It’s a game that gets ugly and there are lots of fouls. We’ve got great leadership so I think we’ll be okay.”

“We need to make sure that we focus on the little things,” Alley said. “We need to be first to the ball.”
