Evart sophomore eyes return to state meet

EVART — It’s been a good start to the outdoor track season for Evart sophomore Mackenzi VanBuren.

She’s focusing on the 100, 200, relays and the long jump. Her season records from a meet with Harrison last week were 13.67 seconds in the 100 meters, and 29.72 seconds in the 200 meters.

VanBuren got her long jump season record on Saturday at Fowler with a performance of 15-3 ¼. She’s also been the anchor of the 4x-200 relay and No. 3 runner in the 4×100 relay.

Her personal records which she notched as a freshman, were 13.6 seconds in the 100 at the Highland Conference meet, 29.12 seconds at the Manton Invitational and 15-9 ½ in the long jump at a league jamboree. A major highlight last season was she qualified for the state finals in the long jump and took 18th.

But the top highlight was being on the 4×100 relay, which placed third at the state meet. The 4×200 relay was sixth at the state meet.

This year, “I want to reach 16 feet for long jump and get a 13-second PR in the 100,” she said. “I need to work on more leg strength.”

The 4×100 is her best relay, VanBuren indicated. It will be a challenge fitting in new runners to replace those who have graduated, she indicated.

“I want to help us be the best we can be,” she said. “We’re a dedicated team.”
