MORLEY — Pine River’s pitching and defense was enough to post two shutouts to win the Mohawk Classic on Saturday at Morley Stanwood.

The Bucks (7-1) won the first game 6-0 over Morley Stanwood in seven innings and they took the second game 10-0 in five innings over White Cloud. Hunter Poe pitched all seven innings in the first games, striking out nine and allowing only one hit and three walks.

Luke Hill had three hits and an RBI. Jordan Koetje had two hits and an RBI. Poe, Lane Ruppert and Jacob Johnson also had hits.

Hill was the winning pitcher in the second game and allowed three hits and one walk. Tanner Shimel had two hits and two RBIs. Hill had two hits and an RBI.

“Our pitchers did a good job of pounding the strike zone,” Pine River coach Shawn Ruppert said. “For the most part, our defense was pretty solid, especially the way the wind was blowing. Hitting-wise, we had some good swings today, better than last Wednesday. We worked hard on hitting the past two days.”

Pine River is home with Mancelona on Tuesday in non-league action.
