POLICE BLOTTER: Police speak with dumpster divers; arrest man for fighting

BIG RAPIDS — Big Rapids Department of Public Safety officers responded to the following calls Thursday. All calls might not be reported.

• Officers were dispatched to handle a complaint from a business on the 800 block of North State Street. The caller said two females were going through the dumpster in the vacant lot behind their business and throwing garbage on the ground. The women were contacted and told they needed to move on if they did not have permission to be on the property from the owner.

• A traffic stop led to a man being cited for operating without insurance.

• Police responded to a possible breaking and entering in progress on the 300 block of South Third Avenue. The location was secure, with no signs or attempt or any suspects in the house.

• Officers made contact with four people who were dumpster diving on the 1200 block of Perry Avenue. The dumpster was not marked or locked. The caller said a child was in the dumpster; however, on arrival, officers found the child was the cleanest of all of them and playing next to the parked car.

• A man received an email threatening to release webcam footage of him watching adult films at his computer. The email was sent to his work email address and identified as a scam by DPS officer.

• Police responded to a disorderly person call on the 600 block of South State, for a man who tried to hop the counter of the location, head-butted a friend and then locked himself in the bathroom. Police made contact with the man, who was identified as the suspect. He was arrested for disorderly person and fighting in public.

• Officers found a man in City Lot 4, with the rear gate of his car open and he was passed out cold in the passenger seat. Officers requested Mecosta County EMS to the scene, and the man was taken to Spectrum Health Big Rapids Hospital.
