BIG RAPIDS — When the going got tough, Selena Wright got going.

The senior midfielder buried the ball into the back of the net with just over a minute remaining in the game to give Big Rapids a 2-1 win over Grant Friday in girls soccer action.

“We executed well,” head coach Curt Ray said. “They had eight defenders in the box so you have to play a different game. We left a lot of scoring opportunities on the field.”

“We played hard throughout the whole game,” Katie Williams said. “The defense did really well at stopping their plays and the mids did a good job of bringing the ball up.”

The Cardinals were coming off a 7-2 loss to Whitehall on Thursday and were looking to get back in the win column but Grant made that difficult.

Josie Sanders scored in the first half for Big Rapids as the Cardinals went into halftime tied 1-1. Big Rapids had several scoring opportunities fall just short before Wright scored the game-winning goal.

“We can put Selena anywhere,” Ray said. “I don’t think there’s a better right winger around here. She can get the ball, beat the defensive line, and put it in play.”

Big Rapids (4-2-1) hosts conference foe Tri County on Monday.

“If we keep playing hard, good things will happen for us,” Williams said.
