Lollipop food drive set for April 30

BIG RAPIDS — City residents who wish to give back to their community need only leave their porch lights on next Tuesday.

From 5 to 8 p.m., on Tuesday, April 30, volunteers from Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home, Patterson’s Flowers, Currie’s Towing, the Big Rapids Township Fire Department and the city of Big Rapids Fire Department will be traveling throughout the city collecting non-perishable food items as part of the first lollipop food drive.

Holly Holstrom, funeral director at Daggett-Gilbert and organizer for the food drive, said she got the idea for the event from a candy cane food drive which is hosted annually around Christmas time in her hometown.

“I’m always trying to find ways to help people,” Holstrom said.

To participate in the food drive, people living within the city limits can leave their porch lights on and volunteers will come to their doors to collect the food and leave a lollipop with those who donate.

For anyone who cannot participate on Tuesday, volunteers also will be collecting donations from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, May 1, at Daggett-Gilbert Funeral Home, 13985 Northland Drive, Big Rapids.

Possible food items to donate include, canned fruit, pudding mix, white rice, instant mashed potatoes, noodles, hamburger helper, cold cereals and other nonperishable items.

“We’re such a family oriented community and it’s nice to come together and do something for each other and educate people about giving back,” Holstrom said.
