BIG RAPIDS — The Big Rapids girls soccer team hit a stumbling block against Tri County on Monday.

The Vikings scored two first-half goals and held serve to beat the Cardinals 2-0 in CSAA Gold play.

“They wanted it more than we did,” head coach Curt Ray said. “They stepped in front of us and we kicked balls into their feet all day long. The defense did a phenomenal job. We’re better than that but we got it handed to us today.”

Consistency on offense is something the Cardinals have been looking for. Big Rapids had several scoring opportunities in and around the box but weren’t able to finish.

“We had our opportunities,” Ray said. “We put them in play but we don’t put it in the back of the net. It is frustrating; we have some girls banged up. We’ve got to pull it together or it’s gonna be a short season.”

The offense had its troubles but the defense and the goalkeepers performed well. The goalkeeping duo of Emma Balahoski and Geralynn McAdams have continued to improve over the course of the young season. McAdams played in net the first half and Balahoski the second half.

“We really push to be a good team,” Balahoski said. “We are a good team. Sometimes what we expect to happen doesn’t happen. I think we’ll do very well this season.”

“We need to step to the ball more and put pressure on the opponent and not let them get shots off,” McAdams said.

Big Rapids (5-3-1) is at Chippewa Hills tonight. The Cardinals are hoping to rebound from Monday’s loss with a Tuesday win.

“I think we played down to (Tri County’s) level,” Balahoski said. “We’re capable of so much more but we didn’t play up to our potential.”
